FOREWORD
This book summarizes the histories many families, businesses, politicians and Churches in Wayne County, North Carolina. Also covered is this book is a history of Wayne county from before the Revolutionary War. to the present. Many photographs of families, maps, buildings and historical figures are included
Topics included:
Local History pages 1 -46
Churches pages 47-86
Education and Commerce pages 87-116
Family Histories pages 117-510
Pictoral Honor Pages pages 511-524
The purpose of this book is to record for our descendants what we know about our ancestors. Some have said, "You can't choose your ancestors, but
that's enough. They probably wouldn't have chosen you either."
The committee hopes you will get pleasure in learning who your ancestors
and your cousins are.
There will be omissions and mistakes but it will be up to the present
generation to correct and add information. That is the fascinating part of
genealogical research: it never ends.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Many have contributed to making our book a
success and it will be impossible to thank everyone;
some deserve our special thanks:
John Baxton Flowers III for giving so generously
of his time and talent in writing the history of our
county.
Ginger Powell for setting up our office and
scheduling hours for our volunteer workers.
Marvin E. Woodard, our treasurer, for taking care
of the books.
Hall Kirkman, for all the work he has done on the
old pictures.
Charlotte R. Carrere for her many hours of typing
and other work she has done on the book.
Dan Austin, director of the Wayne County Library,
and all of his staff, for not only providing us
with office space, but for being helpful in many ways.
Miss Margaret Peacock, register of deeds, for her
help to John Baxton Flowers and many other people.
Steve Hailey, Sherry Martin and Hunter Publishing
Company for their assistance and encouragement.
And the members of The Wayne County Historical
Association and The Old Dobbs County Genealogical
Society for their support and encouragement
during the preparing of the manuscripts.
We would also like to thank all of you who took
the time and effort to write the stories of your families;
without you the book would have remained a
dream.
